The One About Joy, Grief, Loss and Guilt

Mother's Day brings so many emotions. Some of us who are mothers are so excited to be celebrating the little people in our lives who brought us to this point, while also realizing what it means to be a mom and being thankful for all that our own mothers have done for us. Maybe you didn't really have a great mom, someone who didn't lead by example or didn't show love, which brings a whole new set of emotions. Sometimes Mother's Day is too hard because of the loss of your own mom, or the loss of a baby that would have made you a mom.

This past Mother's Day was a little emotional for me as I learned I was expecting baby number six only a few hours before. I was filled with joy and guilt. I was apprehensively excited to learn that I was pregnant and I knew my kids would be super excited because they have been asking me when they would get their next sibling for months. Yet, I felt guilty because inside, my head was swimming with "what" questions. What am I going to do with six kids, when I feel I can hardly handle five? What are people going to say when they find out? What kind of vehicle am I going to have to get to fit the whole family? What am I going to do about my possible job? What? What? What? And those "human flesh" "natural response" questions made me feel guilty. They made me feel bad because I knew with those questions I wasn't trusting God. I was letting my earthly life dictate how I responded. Over the next couple of days I simply let the fact sink it. One more mouth to feed. One more sweet baby to cuddle. One more tuition to pay. One more sibling to love. And I kept coming back to "what's one more?" And it made me happy. I was learning to love the idea of six kids. I mean plenty of women have had six kids and live to tell about it...and love it...why did I have to be any different?

My Favorite Caramel Popcorn

Hi, it's Rachel from Adventures of a DIY Mom
I'm going to share my absolute favorite caramel popcorn recipe. It's soft and chewy and oh so delicious! Another reason it's my favorite - it's so easy!

This is a great recipe for summer. You make it in just a few minutes on the stovetop, so it won't heat up your house like treats made in the oven.

Faux Barn Wood Flower Box

I will admit, that I am loving the metal and wood vintage inspired flower pots, vases, watering cans, and boxes with printed labels on them that are out right now. What I am not excited about is the price of some of the ones that I have run across.

So one day while out shopping I ran across this plain wood box in the wood section of Hobby Lobby and thought it would be fun to make my own version.

Here's how I created it.

Supplies:
-Wooden Box (bought at Hobby Lobby for $9.99)
-Styrofoam rectangles (2)
-Moss
-Faux Flowers
-Folk Art Barn wood Finish
-Hot Glue Gun
-Wire Cutters

Nature Walk Scavenger Hunt Printable

With summer here and school out, the need to find some fun activities to keep the kids occupied has taken a higher priority.
We have numerous parks within walking distance from our house and I thought it would be fun to create a little nature walk scavenger hunt that we could do as we walked there to make it more fun.

.
The girls and I enjoyed doing our little scavenger hunt so I wanted to share with all of you to do something different with your kids as well.

"No Place Like Home" Baseball Diamond Wreath

Hello everyone and welcome to June.  This is Donna from Modern on Monticello again.

The beginning of summer and the warmer weather always reminds me of summer sports events and spending time with my Daddy at the Kinston Indians minor league baseball games in eastern NC.  If you have ever watched the movie Bull Durham you know exactly what I'm talking about.  It was all about the crowds, the hot dogs and the love of the game.

I recently made a wreath for my daughter-in-law's mother featuring a baseball diamond and baseballs, you can see the full post here.  The wreath I am posting about today though was made for my mother and in memory of my Dad's love of the game.

Simple Red, White, & Blue Berry Wreath

I love wreaths. I have a ton of them.
I enjoy making them for different holidays and seasons or just for fun.
I realized I didn't have a good wreath that I could use for July 4th, SAY WHAT?!, so needless to say, I decided to make myself one.

I didn't want it over the top patriotic so I could use it longer than just a few holidays so this is what I ended up making.

I kept it simple and and I am really happy with how it turned out.

Supplies:
-Grapevine Wreath
-Red, White, and Blue Berry picks (found in the floral section of Hobby Lobby and used 4 picks)
-Ribbon
-Hot Glue Gun

"Old Glory" Pallet Flag

Happy Monday!
I hope you all had a great weekend!
We had a fun time at our town's annual festival AND I managed to get some much needed crafting done! YAHOO!! I even have a few more things I need to work on. I felt so good to actual craft once again, now if the ideas would keep coming to me.

Today, I want to share with you a super easy project that is perfect for the upcoming July 4th holiday.

This took me less than an hour to complete from start to finish which is a project I love and is so simple.

Supplies:
-Wood Pallet (I found this at Hobby Lobby and it has 13 pieces of wood)
-Acrylic paint in red, white, and blue,
-Star Stencil
-Sander (optional)

MHCT&M: Projects for the Beach, Lake or Pool

With summer finally here, that means that it's time to head to the beach! (At least, that's what I wish it would mean). While we might not make it to the beach this year, I'm still dreaming of a trip!
I've gathered up some of my favorite projects to make for the beach - but a lot of these would be great for trips to the lake or pool too!

Here are some fun projects to make up to get you all set for relaxing by the water!

Sewing Pattern for a "Splash Proof" zippered phone pouch. Totally making one of these for summer.

Our Future Dream...

So I got a little personal yesterday in my this and that post but I am going to continue to get a little personal again today.

If you've been here a while or have read my About Me page, then you would have read that Travis and I have a dream to own an old plantation home and run it as an event venue for weddings or other fun events.
I had the dream first then told Travis about it either while we were still dating or very early on in our marriage and he agreed that it would be something fun that we both could really enjoy and that once he retired from the Army, we would try to tackle this dream.

Well fast forward to last September when I got an email from an old house blog that shares fabulous old houses for sale and there was this gorgeous plantation house for sale in our home state of TN.

This, That, and Everything in Between- May Edition

It's that time of the month for me to share a little recap of what has been happening in out world.

May wasn't super exciting for us. We were super busy with small activities but nothing crazy and apparently I forgot to take pictures along the way. I think I need to start trying to do that a photo a day activity just to capture a moment of the day even if we aren't really doing anything.

But here is a quick recap of what did actually occur in May.

Travis had a big training exercise on post for the first two weeks of the month.
He had to work super long hours, many nights not making it home for dinner, so when he would actually make it home and the sun was still up and the weather was warm, we tried to take advantage of the situation and have some fun.

The weather played games with us most of the month, a few gorgeous days then back to chilly, but when it was finally warm, these girls loved getting to wear dresses without pants again.
